Serum is tested for antibodies to infective agents and for microbial antigens. The most suitable antibiotics are sought for bacterial infections, and levels of certain antimicrobials are checked in treated patients. Samples of milk, water and foodstuffs are tested to ensure their fitness for human consumption, and investigations are made relating to environmental monitoring
